Preventing Disease

Picture
Anthrax is a serious illness caused by the germ Bacillus anthracis. In Pasteur's time it affected many cattle, sheep, horses, goats, and often caused death. People who worked closely with animals also had a risk of getting it. After working off of the discoveries of Robert Koch, Pasteur was lead down a road towards discovering vaccinations. Koch discovered that you could grow harmful bacteria in a lab and this lead Pasteur to think that maybe he could find a way to develop immunization by injecting weakened or damaged bacteria into an animal or person. The work he did lead directly to lifesaving immunizations today and led us to many vaccines against diseases like diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, and rubella.
